INMO preparation

INMO (the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) is the third round: six proof problems in four and a half hours, for students invited from RMO. INMO 2027 is on Sunday 17 January 2027, 12 noon to 4:30 pm. Prepare the way you prepared for RMO, with harder problems and longer sittings.

How INMO differs from RMO

The format is the same, written proofs to six problems, but the sitting is an hour and a half longer and the problems are harder: HBCSE notes that difficulty rises from RMO to INMO to the IMO. Problems often need two ideas joined together, and the write-up matters as much as it did at RMO. (source: HBCSE)

A plan for the weeks between RMO and INMO

  • Rework the RMO paper in full after the exam, while it is fresh. Every problem you missed is a lesson.
  • Past INMO papers from HBCSE, one problem a day, with a full write-up. Allow an hour before any hint.
  • Two full sittings of 4½ hours at noon on a Sunday before January, to build the stamina the day needs.
  • In the last week, nothing new: the mistakes notebook and rest.

What INMO leads to

The top 48 students from Class 8 to 11 and the top 12 from Class 12 become INMO awardees, with up to 5 more girls. They are invited to the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp in April and May, where selection tests pick India’s team of six for the IMO. Awardees from Class 8 to 11 may write the next INMO directly, without IOQM and RMO. (source: HBCSE)

Who can write INMO 2027?

Students who qualify from RMO 2026, and last year’s INMO awardees who still meet the age and eligibility rules.

What happens after INMO?

The top 48 from Class 8 to 11 and the top 12 from Class 12, plus up to 5 more girls, become INMO awardees and are invited to a month-long training camp in April and May, where India’s team of six for the International Mathematical Olympiad is chosen. The IMO.

When are INMO results declared?

In the last week of February or the first week of March 2027, according to HBCSE’s brochure.

Level 7 is the INMO level

Algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory at INMO depth, with proof study cards for the written problems.
