IMO: the International Mathematical Olympiad

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the world championship of school maths: six students from each country, two days, six problems. How India’s team is chosen

HBCSE runs the selection for the National Board for Higher Mathematics. Each round invites students from the one before. (source: HBCSE)

    30 questions, 3 hours, answers 0 to 99. Class 8 to 12.

  2. RMO 15 Nov 2026

    6 proof problems, 3 hours, by region. By invitation from IOQM.

  3. INMO 17 Jan 2027

    6 proof problems, 4½ hours. By invitation from RMO.

  4. Training camp Apr to May 2027

    A month of training and selection tests for the INMO awardees. The best six form the team.

  5. IMO 16-26 Jul 2027

    Two days, three problems a day, 4½ hours each day.

Girls on the path are also considered for the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, through a separate camp in December.

Not the same as the SOF “IMO”

SOF’s International Mathematics Olympiad, which most schools enter, is a one-hour multiple-choice contest for Classes 1 to 12. It is a good first contest, but it is not part of the selection for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Kiwimath is one route from Class 1 to this summit. Levels 5, 6 and 7 follow IOQM, RMO and INMO, and practice on Kiwimath goes up to Level 7 today. The IMO is where the route points.

Is the SOF IMO the International Mathematical Olympiad?

No. SOF’s International Mathematics Olympiad is a multiple-choice contest for Classes 1 to 12, sat in your own school. The International Mathematical Olympiad takes six students per country, and India’s six are chosen through IOQM, RMO, INMO and the camp. School olympiads by class.

Where is the IMO in 2027?

The 68th IMO is in Budapest, Hungary, from 16 to 26 July 2027.

How young can a student start on the path?

The first exam, IOQM, is open from Class 8. The preparation can start years earlier: most of what the path needs is careful reasoning that children can begin in primary school.
